Keeping children safe is paramount in Damers First School. It is the duty and responsibility of everyone to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.  Damers First School recognises the needs and wishes of every child will be put first.  Safeguarding children and young people means protecting them from abuse or neglect, getting the right support in place as early as possible and creating an environment in which children and young people feel safe and healthy is our priority.  We all have a personal responsibility to notice when a child or young person may be at risk of harm and pass our concerns to someone who can act to protect them.

Our staff and governors have been trained on safeguarding in line with the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 document below and have taken part in ‘Prevent’ training.

Please take time to look at our Safeguarding and Child Protection policy and our Staff Code of Conduct on our School Policies page. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting Moira Bearwish (Designated Safeguarding Lead) who will be able to provide you with support and advice.

If you have concern surrounding a child’s safety contact our local Children’s Advice and Duty Service (CHAD) on  on 01202 228866.

Damers First School values the support of parents and the community and to ensure the safety of our children we have strict volunteering procedures.

If you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer in our school please contact Charlotte Hillier (Parent Support Advisor) via the school office.  Our process, procedures and documentation will be explained to you. If you are successful you will enter into our induction process with safeguarding the main priority.  Click to read our Code of Conduct for Volunteers  or our Expression of Interest form.

Operation Encompass

Our school is part of Operation Encompass. This is a police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people who experience Domestic Abuse.

Operation Encompass means that the police will share information about Domestic Abuse incidents with our school soon after they have been called to a domestic incident.

All Key Adults (DSL/DDSL) have attended an Operation Encompass local briefing as well as national online training.

The Operation Encompass information is stored in line with all other confidential safeguarding and child protection information.

The Key Adult has also led briefings for all school staff and Governors about Operation Encompass, the prevalence of Domestic Abuse and the impact of this abuse on children. We have also discussed how we can support our children following the Operation Encompass notification.

The Safeguarding Governor will report on Operation Encompass in the termly report to Governors. All information is anonymised for these reports.

The Key Adult uses the Operation Encompass Toolkit to ensure that all appropriate actions have been taken by the school.
